What is Envelope Budgeting?

Envelope budgeting is a budgeting method that limits what you can spend on created categories of goods and services. You limit your spending by only spending the money allocated for each of these categories. Traditional envelope budgeting was cash based and worked like this:

Create Envelopes

An envelope followed by an arrow pointing at a second envelope with an example label marked on the top of it.

You start by creating categories (envelopes) of spending. For example, you might have an envelopes entitled: “Eating Out”, “Groceries”, or maybe “Transportation”.

Create A Funding Plan

A money symbol above two arrows pointing at two envelopes. The left envelope has three money symbols in it while the left envelope has two money symbols in it.

When you are paid, you divide the cash into these envelopes based on your funding plan (also known as a “budget”). For example, you might by paid $100. Your funding plan may dictate that you add $20 to your “Transportation” envelope, $25 to your “Eating Out” envelope, and $55 to your “Grocery” envelope.

Only Spend Your Budget

A hand picking up one of the three money symbols in an envelope.

The last step is curbing your spending by always knowing and only spending what money you allocated for this expenditure. For example, if you have $25 in your “Eating Out” envelope, order the $10 hamburger instead of the $30 steak.

By following these steps, envelope budgeting can help you save, attain those goal purchases, and better maintain personal fiscal responsibility. However, dealing with only cash and carrying around all of your cash in physical envelopes is probably not the best idea. Enter the digital envelope budgeting equivalent: onabudget.me.

Different Saving Methods

A set of three envelopes. The first envelope has an arrow pointing at the letter 'A' with a padlock representing an envelope locked or tied to an account. The other two envelopes have arrows pointing from them to two different letter 'A's. This represents envelopes sharing different accounts.

Traditionally, envelopes share assets across all accounts. Alternatively you can have envelopes that are tied to a particular account.

Shareable

The ability to maintain different sets of envelopes and accounts (called “boxes”) as well as share boxes with other onabudget.me users.
